All aboard the Hilliard History Express!

The Hilliard History Express is a fabulous way to experience Hilliard’s roots and the vibrant spirit that continues to grow in Everyone’s Hometown. Created with the help of our neighbors at Hilliard City Schools and the Hilliard Historical Society, this community project brings history to life through the voices of third-grade students who share tales of local landmarks, meaningful places, and the people who helped shape our city.

Along the way, you will find imaginative train sculptures inspired by student drawings. Some were created directly by the students, while others were crafted by their art teacher using student ideas and input. Each train unlocks a story that invites you to slow down, listen, and connect with Hilliard’s past in a playful way.

This experience celebrates curiosity, kindness, and the joy of learning together. Its creativity and community impact were recognized with a RUBY Award from the Ohio Travel Association, honoring the way neighbors came together to make history welcoming and fun for all.

Whether you are a longtime resident or a first-time visitor, we hope you feel right at home as you discover the heart of Hilliard.

Start your journey at any participating location with a train and passport stamp (see the key on the map above).

Click here for an example of the audio attached to QR codes throughout the adventure and to learn more about the Russell Grain Company, a business once located where the Hilliard Civic & Cultural Arts Center and surrounding businesses can be found today.

Gather your friends and family and set out on an adventure!

Complete the journey in one day, or take your time and explore one location each week throughout the summer to fully enjoy every business. This is an ongoing initiative — complete your passport and redeem your prize at Coffee Connections! Choose from a conductor hat, grocery tote, or tee (while supplies last).

A collaboration between Hilliard City Schools, the Hilliard Ohio Historical Society, the City of Hilliard, and Destination Hilliard, this project was awarded a grant provided by the AWS Central Ohio Community Fund 2024, supported by Amazon. Thank you to our sponsor, the Westwood Collective for supporting this initiative.
